GROUNDWATER
Generally speaking, groundwater is water found in the soil. Groundwater pollution refers to pollution from activities on the ground surface that enter the groundwater system. Groundwater is also often called Underground Water or Earth Water.
Industries with the Potential to Pollute Groundwater
Any industry where raw materials or final products are spilled can pollute groundwater. This includes current activities in industrial areas, such as vehicle repair workshops, vehicle refueling facilities, or storage tanks. Industries are still considered to have the potential to pollute groundwater, even if the industrial area or hazardous materials are located in an area with concrete floors, concrete walls, or similar protective measures.
SPeKAT, Environmental Quality Act and Guidelines
Based on the Act and Guidelines, both existing and new industries with the potential to pollute groundwater are required to establish a groundwater quality monitoring system, known as SPeKAT.
